Bachelor of Medical Radiology & Imaging Technology (BMRIT / B.Sc. RIT) is an advanced 3 to 4-year undergraduate degree program designed to train technologists in medical imaging physics, cross-sectional anatomy, advanced diagnostic modalities (CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Interventional Radiology), and radiation protection protocols.

1. Academic & Admission Framework

  • Program Level: Undergraduate Professional Degree
  • Duration: 3 to 4 Years (typically 3 years of academic coursework followed by a 6-month to 1-year mandatory rotatory clinical internship)
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • 10+2 (Higher Secondary) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) with a minimum aggregate score of 50% from a recognized board.
    • Lateral Entry: Candidates holding a recognized 2-year Diploma in X-Ray Technology (DXRT) or Diploma in Radio-Imaging Technology (DRT) are eligible for direct admission into the 2nd year (3rd semester).
  • Affiliation & Approvals: Recognized universities, Allied & Healthcare Professional Councils, and compliance with Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) safety norms.

2. Detailed Curriculum Breakdown

Year 1: Pre-Clinical Sciences & Radiological Physics

  • Human Anatomy & Physiology: General anatomy, detailed osteology, cross-sectional anatomy of the brain, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis.
  • Basic & Radiological Physics: Atomic structure, electromagnetic radiation, X-ray generation mechanics (Bremsstrahlung and Characteristic), tube rating charts, cooling curves, interactions of radiation with matter (Photoelectric, Compton, Pair Production).
  • Radiographic Equipment & Darkroom Technology: High-frequency X-ray generators, rotating anode X-ray tubes, collimators, grids, CR (Photostimulable Phosphor) systems, and DR (Flat Panel Detectors—Indirect/Direct conversion).
  • Patient Care & Hospital Practice: Infection control, sterile techniques, CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS), managing emergencies in radiology suites, and medical ethics.

Year 2: Radiographic Techniques, Special Procedures & Cross-Sectional Modalities

  • Radiographic Positioning & Techniques: Conventional and non-routine projections of the axial and appendicular skeleton, trauma radiography, pediatric and geriatric radiography.
  • Contrast Media & Special Procedures: Positive and negative contrast agents, adverse reaction protocols, Barium studies (Swallow, Meal, BMFT, Enema), IVU, MCU, RGU, HSG, Sialography, and Sinography.
  • Computed Tomography (CT) Fundamentals:
    • Scanner generations, helical/spiral CT, slip-ring technology, detector arrays.
    • Image reconstruction algorithms (Filtered Back Projection, Iterative Reconstruction).
    • Hounsfield scale (attenuation values), windowing (WW/WL), pitch, and slice thickness.
    • Non-contrast and contrast-enhanced CT protocols (Brain, Thorax, Abdomen, Angiography).
  • Ultrasonography (USG) & Color Doppler: Piezoelectric effect, transducer types, acoustic impedance, resolution types, Doppler shift, color/power Doppler, and elastography basics.

Year 3: Advanced Imaging Modalities, Quality Control & Safety

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Physics & Applications:
    • Magnet types (superconducting), gradient coils, RF coils, Larmor frequency.
    • Pulse sequences: T1,T2, Proton Density (PD), Inversion Recovery (STIR, FLAIR), Gradient Echo (GRE), Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI), and MR Angiography (MRA).
    • MRI safety protocols: Ferromagnetic projectile hazard management, Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), and implant screening.
  • Interventional Radiology & Angiography: Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) principles, roadmapping, C-arm units, catheter/guidewire handling, and vascular/non-vascular interventions.
  • Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging: Radioisotopes (99mTc, 18F-FDG), Gamma Camera, SPECT, PET-CT integration, and radiopharmaceutical handling.
  • Radiation Protection & Quality Assurance (QA/QC):
    • ICRP and AERB safety guidelines, ALARA principle, occupational dose limits (20 mSv/year).
    • Structural shielding (lead equivalence calculations for walls, glass, and doors).
    • Quality assurance testing: Focal spot size verification, beam alignment, timer accuracy, HVL measurement, and CT/MRI phantom calibration.

3. Clinical & Technical Competencies Acquired

  • Independently operating multi-slice CT scanners (16 to 128+ slices) for routine, trauma, and contrast-enhanced vascular studies.
  • Executing diagnostic MRI protocols on 1.5T and 3.0T systems, including sequence selection and artifact reduction.
  • Operating Fixed/Mobile Digital Radiography (DR) systems and C-arm fluoroscopy units in surgical suites.
  • Reconstructing 3D images using post-processing workstations (MPR, MIP, VRT, MinIP).
  • Managing PACS, RIS, and DICOM workflows for hospital imaging networks.
  • Administering non-ionic IV contrast media using automatic power injectors and monitoring for adverse contrast reactions.

4. Career Opportunities & Job Roles

  • Senior Radiology & Imaging Technologist: Multi-specialty hospitals, trauma centers, and diagnostic imaging chains.
  • CT / MRI Specialist Technologist: High-end tertiary diagnostic centers and corporate hospital chains.
  • Interventional Radiology Technologist: Cath labs and dedicated interventional radiology suites.
  • Clinical Application Specialist: Technical and clinical training roles with medical device manufacturers (e.g., GE HealthCare, Siemens Healthineers, Philips, Canon Medical Systems).
  • Radiation Safety Officer (RSO Level-1): Certified radiation safety officer roles in medical diagnostic facilities (subject to qualifying AERB RSO examinations).
  • Quality Assurance Executive: Diagnostic accreditation audits (NABH, NABL) and equipment calibration.
