Diploma in Radio-Imaging Technology (DRT) is a specialized 2-year undergraduate paramedical diploma designed to train students in fundamental and intermediate diagnostic imaging procedures, spanning conventional radiography, digital image processing, fluoroscopy, and introductory cross-sectional imaging (CT scan basics).

1. Academic & Admission Framework

  • Program Level: Undergraduate Paramedical Diploma
  • Duration: 2 Academic Years (plus a mandatory 3 to 6-month clinical rotation/internship in a multi-specialty hospital)
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • 10+2 (Higher Secondary) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) or Mathematics (PCM).
    • Minimum aggregate score of 45%–50% from a recognized board.
  • Affiliation & Approvals: State Paramedical Faculties / Medical Boards and compliance with Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) safety standards.

2. Detailed Curriculum Breakdown

First Year: Basic Medical Sciences & Imaging Fundamentals

  • Anatomy & Physiology: Human osteology, skeletal landmarks, thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic organ systems, nervous system basics, and vascular pathways.
  • Radiological & Radiation Physics: Atomic structure, electromagnetic spectrum, X-ray generation (Bremsstrahlung & Characteristic radiation), radiation interactions with matter (Compton effect, Photoelectric effect), exposure parameters (kVp, mA, mAs).
  • Darkroom, CR & DR Processing: Film-screen chemistry, computed radiography (CR) photostimulable phosphor (PSP) plate readers, direct digital radiography (DR) flat-panel detectors (scintillators and amorphous silicon/selenium), and basic artifact identification.
  • Patient Care & Clinical Practice: Vital signs monitoring, sterile handling, infection control protocols, emergency care, contrast media basics, and medical ethics.

Second Year: Radiographic Procedures, Modalities & Radiation Safety

  • Routine & Specialized Positioning:
    • Skeletal radiography (axial, appendicular, skull series, PNS, spine series).
    • Abdominal, chest, and pelvic positioning under trauma and non-trauma conditions.
  • Special Fluoroscopic Procedures: Barium series (swallow, meal, follow-through, enema), Intravenous Urography (IVU), Micturating Cystourethrography (MCU), Retrograde Urethrography (RGU), and Hysterosalpingography (HSG).
  • Introduction to Advanced Modalities: Basic principles of Computed Tomography (CT gantry, detectors, Hounsfield scale) and introductory concepts of Ultrasonography (USG) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
  • Radiation Protection & Quality Assurance: ALARA principle, ICRP/AERB regulatory dose limits (20 mSv/yearfor occupational workers), structural shielding (1.5–2.0 mm Pb), lead PPE inspection, TLD card monitoring, and X-ray beam alignment tests.

3. Clinical & Technical Competencies Acquired

  • Operating conventional, high-frequency, and digital X-ray consoles.
  • Managing mobile (bedside) X-ray units in ICUs, NICUs, and emergency triage wards.
  • Operating mobile C-Arm fluoroscopy units during orthopedic and surgical procedures in operation theaters.
  • Handling basic multi-slice CT consoles for non-contrast routine scans (head, thorax, spine).
  • Managing DICOM image datasets, basic post-processing, and PACS transmission.

4. Career Opportunities & Job Roles

  • Radio-Imaging Technician / Radiographer: Diagnostic clinics, private multi-specialty hospitals, and government medical facilities.
  • C-Arm / Fluoroscopy Technician: Operation theaters, orthopedic trauma units, and surgical suites.
  • Junior CT Scan Technician: High-volume imaging centers under the supervision of senior technologists.
  • Mobile / Bedside Radiographer: Inpatient wards, ICUs, and home-care diagnostic setups.
  • Application Assistant: Equipment demonstrations and consumable sales for medical device manufacturers.

5. Academic Progression Pathway

  • Lateral Entry to Degree Programs: Direct admission into the 2nd year of BMRIT / B.Sc. RIT (Bachelor of Medical Radiology & Imaging Technology).
  • Post-Diploma Advanced Certifications: Specialized 6-month to 1-year fellowships/certificates in CT scan, MRI technology, or Mammography.
  • Long-Term Trajectory: BMRIT → MMRIT / M.Sc. RIT → Senior Cross-Sectional Technologist, Department In-Charge, or Clinical Tutor.
