Post Graduate Diploma in CT & MRI Technology (PGD-CT/MRI) is a specialized 1-year postgraduate professional program designed to provide intensive clinical training and technical expertise exclusively in cross-sectional imaging modalities.

1. Academic & Admission Framework

  • Program Level: Postgraduate Diploma / Clinical Specialization Fellowship
  • Duration: 1 Academic Year (divided into 2 semesters, with continuous hospital-based rotational postings)
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Radiology & Imaging Technology (BMRIT / B.Sc. RIT / B.Sc. MIT) or an equivalent graduate degree in imaging technology from a recognized institution.
    • Minimum aggregate score of 50% at the graduate level.
  • Affiliation & Regulatory Compliance: Recognized paramedical boards/universities, with training aligned with AERB radiation safety guidelines and international MRI safety standards.

2. Detailed Curriculum Breakdown

Semester 1: Advanced Computed Tomography (CT) Systems

  • CT Instrumentation & Physics: Helical/spiral geometry, multi-detector row CT (MDCT), slip-ring technology, flat-panel volumetric CT, and detector materials (scintillation crystals with silicon photodiodes).
  • Scan Parameters & Optimization: Tube current modulation (organ-based dose reduction), pitch factor selection, matrix sizing, slice collimation, and windowing settings (WW/WL).
  • Clinical CT Protocols: High-resolution CT (HRCT) chest, multiphase abdominal imaging (triphasic liver, pancreatic protocol, renal mass staging), CT enterography, trauma whole-body pan-scan, and non-contrast emergency brain triage.
  • CT Angiography & Interventional Guidance: Bolus tracking vs. test bolus techniques, timing bolus optimization for carotid, cerebral, pulmonary, and peripheral runoff CTA; CT-guided stereotactic biopsies and drainage procedures.
  • Radiation Dosimetry in CT: Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTD vol), Dose Length Product (DLP), Effective Dose estimation, and diagnostic reference levels (DRLs).

Semester 2: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) & Post-Processing

  • MRI Hardware & Physical Principles: Superconducting magnet design, passive/active shimming, gradient systems (amplitude, slew rate, rise time), multi-channel phased-array surface coils, and Larmor equation mechanics.
  • Pulse Sequence Design & Optimization: Spin Echo (SE), Fast Spin Echo (FSE/TSE), Gradient Echo (GRE), Inversion Recovery (STIR, FLAIR), Chemical Shift imaging (fat suppression techniques), and Fast/Echo Planar Imaging (EPI).
  • Advanced Clinical MRI Protocols:
    • Neuro: Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI), Perfusion-Weighted Imaging (PWI), Magnetic Resonance Angiography (Time-of-Flight MRA, CE-MRA), MR Venography (MRV).
    • Musculoskeletal: High-resolution joint imaging (shoulder, knee, hip labrum, wrist cartilage mapping).
    • Abdomen & Pelvis: Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced (DCE) liver imaging, multi-parametric prostate MRI (PI-RADS standard).
  • Workstation 3D Post-Processing: Multiplanar Reconstruction (MPR), Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP), Minimum Intensity Projection (MinIP), Volume Rendering Technique (VRT), and vessel tracking algorithms.
  • MRI Safety & Contrast Pharmacology: Projectile hazard zones (Zones I–IV), Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limits, acoustic protection, screening for passive/active implants, gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), and Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) risk stratification.

3. Core Technical & Clinical Competencies Acquired

  • Setting up, calibrating, and running high-slice CT scanners (32 to 128+ slice platforms) for routine, emergency, and vascular indications.
  • Independently operating 1.5T and 3.0T MRI consoles, adjusting sequence parameters (TR, TE, TI, Flip Angle, NEX/NSA) to balance SNR, spatial resolution, and scan time.
  • Handling automatic dual-head power injectors for iodinated and gadolinium contrast media administration, including IV cannulation and extravasation management.
  • Identifying and rectifying imaging artifacts in CT (motion, beam hardening, metal streak, ring artifacts) and MRI (ghosting, chemical shift, susceptibility, wrap-around/aliasing).
  • Managing DICOM routing, 3D post-processing workflows, and integration with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).

4. Career Opportunities & Job Roles

  • Dedicated CT / MRI Technologist: Corporate hospital chains, tertiary diagnostic centers, and neuro/trauma institutes.
  • Cross-Sectional Imaging Lead: Supervise multi-slice CT and high-field MRI units in imaging departments.
  • OEM Clinical Application Specialist (CT/MRI): Conduct on-site software training, protocol setup, and hardware demonstrations for medical device manufacturers.
  • Cardiac / Neuro Imaging Specialist: Specialized advanced diagnostic setups focusing on CTA and advanced neuro-MRI.
  • Teleradiology Technical Coordinator: Coordinate raw data transfer, quality checks, and protocol management between imaging centers and central reading hubs.
