At Allied Health Care Services we know how damaging the stigma around living with disabilities can be for all ages, particularly in children which can be both frustrating and upsetting for the loved ones of these individuals. We believe that disabilities only make our clients more beautiful and can recognise that a motivated and enthusiastic child is the happiest and most fulfilled. we are able to provide ways in which you can motivate your loved one from home and ways in which we can provide care to motivate them!
Learn what motivates them!
Some individuals are motivated internally, while others are motivated externally. Finding out what inspires your loved one can help you offer tasks to them in a more effective way.
Internal motivation occurs when the sense of accomplishment that comes from putting in the effort motivates you to keep going. Popescu says that you should include relaxation times and plenty of variation throughout the day for individuals who have internal motivation so that they may keep a productive and balanced routine.
On the other hand, external motivation is when the individual responds to things like good grades and praise as motivation. In this case, by reminding them of things they’ve achieved and encouraging them verbally, this can help help to motivate them!
Some may thrive on routine, while other’s like variation to stimulate their minds. What we do as carers, is work to understand what each individual client needs from us, and can then work with them to create a care plan that works for everyone involved, while focussing implicitly on the needs of the client.
To maintain motivation it is also crucial that the individual has people to rely on and can trust. When they feel loved and comfortable they can focus on motivating themselves to achieve the things they may only dream of. This is why finding the right carer is essential to a happy and motivated person, disabilities or not. Everyone deserves to be treated equally and have an equal chance at living the life they want!
